#9: Glissade
Nous avons glissé en familles au Carnaval d’hiver. Ce fut une belle opportunité de rencontrer d’autres familles de notre quartier et de la communauté fransaskoise de Saskatoon.
We went sliding with other families at the Winter carnaval. It was a great opportunity to meet other families from the neighbourhood and from Saskatoon’s fransaskoise community.

10 000 pas
Hélas, non! Je me suis convaincu plusieurs fois que le fameux podomètre était défectueux ou que je ne le portais pas de la bonne façon, mais après plusieurs vérifications, il semble qu’il fonctionne très bien. C’est moi. Je fais au plus, dans une journée normale (sans activités physiques planifiées), environ 3500 pas. Hmmf.
Some experts recommend doing 10,000 steps every day to keep in shape. Have you ever tried this? I borrowed a pedometer this week from CAFE-La Passerelle to try out this challenge – or at least figure out if a stay-at-home mom running after two kids all day would arrive at the magic number, naturally.
In reality, walking 10,000 steps is walking about 8 kilometers. Not easy incorporating this into your day, every day! But my pedometer and I are resolute and I’ll get back to you on this not-so-little challenge.

#8: Taekwondo
I’m starting to get some really good physical activity ideas from people. Please keep them coming! I’ll try to do as many as I can. In fact today, a friend offered to teach me a few Taekwondo moves. The 20-minute walk to her house (at -18C) felt good. Gyeong rye (bowing)
#7: Ménage
Les fillettes m’aideront avec le ménage seulement si ça l’implique du savon à mousser, des éponges bien imbibées d’eau, et de la musique entraînante! Ce matin, nous avons donc passé une belle demi-heure (productive) à danser les pieds ratatinés!
The girls will help me with housework only if it involves soapy bubbles, waterlogged sponges, and fast music! So this morning, we spent a great (productive) half-hour dancing with wrinkled feet!

#6: Tai Chi
J’ai commencé à apprendre le tai-chi pour mieux savourer ce temps de la journée, qui je me suis approprié. C’est une activité physique qui demande justement d’être présente. On se concentre sur sa respiration, on observe son balan, et l’on se donne à des mouvements tout à fait en harmonie avec la mécanique de nos muscles et de nos membres.
I am one of those morning persons. I love this brief period in the day where one can really live « in the moment ». The city sleeps, everything is closed, there’s no other choice than to admire the sun rising, or in the absence of it, to spend some time with yourself.
I started learning tai chi to better savour this time of day, which I appropriated for myself. It’s an activity that demands that you be in the moment. You concentrate on your breathing, you observe your balance, and you give in to movements that are in perfect harmony with the mechanics of your muscles and your limbs.

#5: Marche avec poussette et traineau
Going somewhere with two kids, under 4, in winter, when there’s more than 20 cm of snow in the streets, and your partner took the car, is a sizable challenge in itself! Our mode of transportation was surprisingly effective but it still took us 20 minutes to go 400 meters from our home to the daycare. I did the trip four times by pushing the Chariot forward and pulling the sleigh behind, simultaneously. I think I earned that chocolate bar this week!
#4: Yoga
After spending most of the night in my living room chair, because of my aching back, I felt some gentle yoga was badly needed. In all honesty, I spent most of the half-hour in the child pose stretching my knotted muscles out while my children vigorously performed the following poses around me: mountain, tree, cat, downward dog, and tiger (a creation of the oldest, see pic).

#3: Cache-cache
It’s hard to beat a good game of hide-and-seek when a blizzard rages on outside. Plus, with my aching back, a hunched over position – even if it means hiding in a recycling bin – feels strangely nice.
Quand le corps ne veut pas suivre
Aïe mon dos! Ça y est, je me suis barré le dos une fois de plus - cette fois en pelletant. Je marche maintenant recourbée comme un pingouin et je bouillonne d’indignation. Quelle stupidité! Je sais trop bien que j’ai une faiblesse dans le bas du dos et que je ne peux me permettre d’être mal en point avec deux jeunes enfants qui dépendent de moi chaque jour. Quelle bêtise! Et dehors une neige abondante, condition parfaite pour une randonnée en ski de fond. Hmmf.
Dang, my back! I overdid it again shovelling and hurt my back. As I waddle like a penguin, hunched over, I fume. How stupid of me! I know I have a weakness in my lower back and that I can’t afford to be out of service with two little girls dependent on me every day. I’m so careless sometimes! And outside, there is an abundance of snow perfect for a ski outing. Hmmf.

#2: Creuser un Quinzee
Now that's a substantial snow fall! Papa took advantage of the blizzardy day to feed the mountain of snow we had started in the backyard over the holidays. The girls' sledding hill was sufficiently hard enough to dig a quinzee hut.

#1: Pelleter
One of the first things that struck us after moving to Saskatoon from the Yukon is how much care our new neighours put into maintaining their lawns in summer and clearing their driveways and walkways when it snows. Last night was no exception. Feeling the pressure to conform to the social habits of the neighbourhood, we went out to shovel the 2 millimetres of powder that fell. I think the kids appreciated the fresh air because they went to bed without a fuss.
